BIBLIOGRAPHY
This is the fifth select bibliography on Aphrodisias. Earlier lists of publications
have appeared in:
K.T. Erim, Aphrodisias, City of Venus-Aphrodite (London 1986) 184-93.
J. de la GeniËre and K. Erim, eds., Aphrodisias de Carie (Paris 1987) 159-65
(compiled by K. Erim).
K.T. Erim and C. RouechÈ, Aphrodisias Papers (JRA Suppl. 1, Ann Arbor 1990)
34 (compiled by K. Erim).
R.R.R. Smith and C. RouechÈ, eds., Aphrodisias Papers 3 (JRA Suppl. 20,
Ann Arbor 1996) 72 (compiled by R. Smith).
The purpose of this bibliography is to provide a more up-to-date and useful
list of important publications on Aphrodisias, focusing on the results of
the EXCAVATIONS begun by New York University in 1961. Citations of earlier
publications are limited to the primary and in our judgement most important
studies, such as the accounts of the first scientific expeditions of the
Society of the Dilettanti (1840), publications of inscriptions which have
still not been superseded (in for example CIG and MAMA), the reports of
the early French (1904-05) and Italian (1935-36) excavators, and fundamental
early studies of the sculpture of Aphrodisias such as Squarciapinoís La
scuola di Afrodisia (1943). We have not included encyclopedia entries (in
RE, for example), or general studies such as D. Magieís Roman Rule in Asia
Minor (Princeton 1950). For a fuller list of publications on research at
Aphrodisias before 1961, see: K.T. Erim, Aphrodisias, City of Venus-Aphrodite
(London 1986).
For publications of the results of the NYU expedition, we have tried to
be complete, with a number of important exceptions. We have not included
references to L. Robertís many notes on inscriptions from Aphrodisias in
the Bulletin Epigraphique and other publications; nor have we included lemmata
on inscriptions from Aphrodisias in SEG. We have also omitted the short
entries on Aphrodisias (usually contributed by K. Erim) in the regular survey
articles on archaeology in Turkey in the American Journal of Archaeology,
Anatolian Studies, and Anatolica, as well as Erimís periodic contibutions
to the Fasti Arceologici. In addition, we have continued to omit encyclopedia
articles (in LIMC, for example) and general studies such as S. Price, Rituals
and Power. The Roman Imperial Cult in Asia Minor (Cambridge 1984). We have
omitted notices in popular journals such as the Illustrated London News.
Once again, a fuller list of publications on Aphrodisias between 1961 and
1986 may be found in K.T. Erim, Aphrodisias, City of Venus-Aphrodite (London
1986). We have, however, expanded on earlier bibliographies in providing
separate entries for all the articles in the various volumes of collected
papers on Aphrodisias (especially Aphrodisias de Carie [1987] and Aphrodisias
Papers 1-3 [1990, 1991, and 1996]).
