Frequently Asked Questions

The Student Resource Center features the NYU Parents' Helpline, which fields hundreds of calls each year from NYU parents. Below are some frequently asked questions from the Parents' Helpline. If you have questions that are not addressed here or elsewhere, please contact the Parents' Helpline at 212-998-4219 or via email at parents@nyu.edu.

Where can I find a list of items that students should bring or not bring to NYU?

Residents are expected to supply their own pillows, blankets, towels, and linens/sheets (80" long). Items such as incandescent or fluorescent study lights, surge protectors, curtains, rugs, posters, microwave ovens, alarm clocks, and other personal accessories are permitted and may be helpful. Prohibited items include halogen lights, candles, toaster ovens, hot plates, wall phones, and pets. Students may wish to coordinate with their roommate(s) in advance to avoid having multiple appliances such as TVs, micro-waves, or small refrigerators. The Department of Housing and Residence Life provides a complete list of items that students should bring as well as items that are prohibited in NYU residence halls. This list is accessible on-line at http://www.nyu.edu/housing/policies/moving-whattobring.html

What can I expect on check-in day?

Thousands of new students move into NYU residence halls each year, which makes check-in exciting and very busy. Staff in each residence hall will be available to help make the move-in process go smoothly; a limited number of carts are also available for moving baggage into the halls. Housing and Residence Life recommends that students whose last name begins with the letters A-L arrive before noon, and those whose last name begins with M-Z arrive in the afternoon.

New York City police will ticket vehicles parked in unauthorized or time-restricted areas. To ensure safety and avoid being ticketed, it is very important that someone in your party stay with your vehicle at all times and be prepared to move it. Do not leave your car or your belongings unattended at any time during the move-in process.

When is Parents' Day?

NYU Parents' Day is usually scheduled for a Saturday during the second half of October. Parents' Day programs offer an opportunity to learn about your student's experience at NYU. Deans and faculty members from each school host information sessions, student services offices feature presentations, and lunch is available in the University dining halls. Click: Parents' Day for more information.

What banks are in the area? How can my student cash a check?

In order to cash checks, students will need access to an account at a local bank. There are several banks near the Washington Square campus, including Citibank, Chase, Washington Mutual, HSBC, and Commerce Bank. For the most convenient branch, students may choose to select a bank near their residence hall or academic facility. Please call the Parents' Helpline at 212-998-4219 for details on which bank branches are situated near a particular residence.

What are NYU's policies concerning community standards?

Student conduct and community standards are an important part of belonging to the NYU community. Specific guidelines for all University policies and procedures are provided in the Student's Guide to NYU. Information is available on such topics as general student conduct, disciplinary procedures, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), sexual harassment, and more.

Each incoming student should receive a copy of the Student's Guide to NYU at orientation. Copies may also be requested from school student affairs offices or from the Student Resource Center. The Student's Guide to NYU is also available on-line, at www.nyu.edu/students.guide. The Department of Housing and Residence Life provides guidelines and procedures specific to campus residents. Housing procedures are available on the housing Web site at www.nyu.edu/housing.

Where can my student find out what's happening on campus?

The best resource for activities and programs on campus is the NYU on-line calendar at www.calendar.nyu.edu. This listing features programs sponsored by academic departments and programs and by student clubs, as well as all-University events. Additionally, the Office of Student Activities publishes a list of club meetings and events each Monday in the NYU student newspaper, The Washington Square News.

What is Campus Cash? How can I deposit money into my student's Campus Cash account?

Campus Cash is a feature of the NYU student ID, the NYUCard. Campus Cash accounts can be used in residence halls, at off-campus merchants, at NYU Ticket Central, and for laundry, vending machines, and more. Parents or students may deposit funds into Campus Cash via telephone, where deposits may be charged to a credit card. For complete details on Campus Cash, including a list of locations that accept Campus Cash, please visit the NYUCard Web site at www.nyu.edu/nyucard.

Can students use the Student Health Center if they don't have NYU Health Insurance?

All matriculated NYU students may use the Student Health Center (SHC) regardless of the source of their health insurance. Beginning the Fall 2006 term, matriculated students will have access to routine and urgent primary and women's health care visits either at no cost or at significantly reduced cost. Short term counseling and wellness visits are also available at no cost. Even with this significant benefit, however, it is still mandatory for students to have insurance coverage that meets NYU requirements. For SHC services not covered by the above benefit, payment will be expected at the time of service or billed to the student's own insurance plan.
