Parent's Guide | Student Life | Health & Safety | Keeping Safe at NYU

Safety is an important concern in any large city. While New York City has gained a reputation as being increasingly safe and livable, as in all large cities, it’s still wise to be reasonably cautious in getting around and doing things in the Big Apple. With common sense and street smarts, students will find that it really is possible to fully enjoy this exciting city and campus. The University provides the following safety programs to help students:

24-hour emergency number (212) 998-2222 or TTY (212) 998-2220 for the hearing impaired
"Green light" buildings with 24-hour security staffing
Security officers at residence halls and most academic buildings
Volunteer Protection Program: "NYU Safe Haven"
Emergency call boxes
Crime prevention seminars/surveys/publications
Student patrols to monitor hazardous conditions in academic buildings
Safety alerts-community notification on specific issues and topics including crime patterns and trends
ID cards-for access control
Operation ID-property identification program (available at the local NYPD precinct)
Campus patrols-bikes, vehicles, scooters, and foot patrols
