STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

Study abroad offers students a rewarding academic experience and direct cultural immersion that broadens and enhances their education by providing an international perspective and a competitive edge in our global society.

NYU offers its own programs in Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, and Prague taught by NYU faculty and by international faculty from host universities. In addition, 16 exchange programs with international universities, as well as summer study abroad opportunities at over 25 locations around the world, are available to students. In the coming years, additional sites and programs will become available.

Students can choose to study abroad for a summer, a semester, or an entire academic year. Both native language and English-speaking programs are available.

Students interested in applying to one of the NYU programs conducted during the academic year should contact the Study Abroad Admissions Office for more information. Students interested in a summer study abroad program should contact the Office of Summer Sessions. Students who are interested in studying abroad with one of the exchange programs or through a non-NYU program should contact the Office of Global Education, which can provide information and advisement. The Office of Global Education maintains an extensive library of descriptive information about study abroad programs that are offered by other universities and nonprofit exchange organizations.

NYU in Florence
Florence, the heart of the Renaissance, is an ideal place to learn about the past and future of modern Europe. La Pietra, NYU’s center for study abroad in Florence, is a magnificent 57-acre estate of five villas that offers an extraordinary campus environment, with its own early Renaissance art collection, newly renovated on-site classrooms, computer labs, E-mail and Internet access, and other facilities. Courses are available in English and Italian at La Pietra and in Italian at the University of Florence. Students live in apartments in residential areas or in villas at La Pietra.

NYU in London
NYU in London offers an unusually wide and innovative course of study that enables students to take not only traditional study abroad classes in the humanities, but also in a range of social and natural sciences. Courses in the humanities and social sciences have been designed to move beyond the usual region-specific offerings in order to connect British history, culture, and society with the larger world. NYU in London has also distinguished itself by offering a number of courses in the sciences and pre-health professions, and the program is particularly well suited to the science student who prefers a more intimate academic setting with individual attention. The NYU academic center is located in Bedford Square in the heart of London’s university district and is near major cultural institutions such as the British Museum. The center includes classrooms, computer labs, a student lounge, and teleconference equipment—all housed within a carefully restored 18th-century Georgian mansion.

NYU in Madrid
Madrid, located on the central plateau of Spain, is one of the great modern capitals of Europe, renowned for its museums, night life, cafés, and restaurants. NYU in Madrid is located at El Viso. The two recently renovated buildings feature state-of-the-art classrooms, computer facilities, and a patio. Students learn about Hispanic culture, history, and society in this vibrant European capital and select from undergraduate programs taught in English or Spanish. Qualified advanced students may also take courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Most students live in homestays in Madrid.

NYU in Paris
Paris, one of the most exhilarating cities in the world, is an exciting setting for study abroad with a wealth of cultural offerings. The NYU Center in Paris, located on the Right Bank near the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero, houses classrooms, a lecture hall, a library, a video collection, computer facilities, a lounge, and a garden. Students can choose to study in English, intermediate French, or advanced French courses that are available at the NYU Center, the University of Paris, and the Institut d’Études Politiques. A variety of housing options are available in Paris.

NYU in Prague
Prague, the hundred-spired heart of historic Bohemia and the capital of the modern Czech Republic, is the cultural and intellectual center of the nation. The NYU Center is situated at Male Namesti in a 15th-century building only steps away from the Old Town Square. Facilities include an English language reference library, computer room with E-mail and Internet facilities, a darkroom, offices, and classrooms. Students may study Czech, Russian, German, or Polish in this multicultural city while they take other courses in English at the historic NYU Center and Charles University.

NYU Summer Abroad
NYU Summer Abroad offers summer study in the Balkans, Cuba, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Uganda. Students interested in one of our summer study abroad programs should contact the Office of Summer Sessions at 212-998-2292 or www.nyu.edu/summer.

Student Exchange Program at Historically Black Colleges

The Faculty Resource Network has established a student exchange program for outstanding undergraduates between New York University and six historically black colleges and two Hispanic-serving colleges: Bennett College, Dillard University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Tougaloo College, University of Puerto Rico, University of the Sacred Heart in Puerto Rico, and Xavier University of Louisiana.

New York University students from the College of Arts and Science, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, the Steinhardt School of Education, and the Tisch School of the Arts who are accepted into the exchange program spend a semester of full-time study at one of the eight liberal arts colleges. Students from these institutions may study at New York University and enjoy the benefits of a large, urban, co-educational research institution.

The exchange program is offered for the fall and spring semesters of each academic year to students with sophomore or junior standing. Participating students reside in on-campus housing facilities and participate in honors program activities. NYU students can satisfy major and other degree requirements while studying at one of the host colleges by receiving prior written approval from their academic advisor.
