Head Men's Swimming Coach/Palladium Natatorium Manager Phone: 992-8531 Email: robert.sorensen@nyu.edu Entering his 29th season as New York University’s men’s swimming head coach, Bob Sorensen has seen his program evolve into a Division III national power. Going into the 2008-09 campaign, he has recorded a career record of 175-110 with 32 NCAA qualifiers and 25 All-Americans. Sorensen and the Violets enjoyed their greatest success in 2007-08: an all-time best ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, a perfect 9-0 mark in dual meets, a second-place performance at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, and a second-place showing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. Eight of Sorensen’s swimmers qualified for the 2008 NCAA Championships, with each of them earning All-America honors. This included junior Andrew Lardiere finishing as the national runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle – the best performance on a national stage by a NYU swimmer. Overall, the Violets shattered 11 school records in 2007-08. With their perfect record in dual meets, Sorensen’s swimmers improved to 36-4 over the past four seasons, and have won three ECAC Championships (2005-07). Meanwhile, Sorensen has had a NCAA qualifier in each of the past eight years, as well as 17 of the last 18 campaigns. At the UAA Championships, Lardiere was named the Swimmer of the Meet, while Sorensen and his staff collected Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second time in three years. The Violets also have succeeded out of the water under Sorensen, as evidenced by 14 of his student-athletes being named to the 2007-08 UAA Winter Sport All-Academic honor roll. Sorensen began his coaching career at the Boy’s Club of Queens, and two years later became coach at Mater Christi High School, his alma mater. He also served as an assistant coach at the Flushing YMCA in addition to terms as President and Vice President of the Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Conference. In addition to his coaching duties at NYU, Sorensen serves as the Natatorium Manager for the Palladium Athletic Facility. He instructs classes in swimming, lifeguard training, CPR, and First Aid. A 1974 graduate of St. John’s University with a degree in political science, Sorensen co-captained the Red Storm’s swim team and was a Metropolitan Conference Champion in the 200-yard butterfly. He also earned a master’s degree in physical education at Teachers College of Columbia University in 1982. A native of Astoria, NY, Sorensen and his family reside in Brooklyn. |
