The SSC recommends that $20,000 and sufficient space be allocated toward piloting a biofeedback/stress reduction initiative at NYU
The Proposal
Through the use of interactive biofeedback (http://bit.ly/ao9YIV) software and kiosks, students will learn to recognize and self-regulate stress, anxiety, and improve their overall performance in the classroom as well as their overall functioning.
The implementation of a biofeedback system at NYU will assist in closing some of the counseling service gaps that the hotline and Wellness Exchange email have begun to address.
Suggested locations for this pilot include: the recreation room in the lower level of Lafayette Hall; Coles gym; Kimmel, 10th floor and 5th floor of Bobst and OISS.
NYU Administration Response
The SHC agrees that a pilot program that is jointly led by Counseling and Wellness Services and the Health Promotion Office and supported by our partners within the Division of Student Affairs should be implemented. Our goals for the pilot would be to have students 1) initiate a self-help approach to stress management using biofeedback equipment and modules 2) become aware of the range of student health services offered at NYU, and 3) engage with counseling and wellness professionals when self help approaches are not providing the student the desired benefits.
SHC will work with SHAB and our colleagues in Student Affairs to identify the most reliable and secure biofeedback devices, appropriate furnishings and suitable space during the pilot. An evaluation plan will be developed prior to implementation and the SHC will absorb the entire expense for this pilot initiative.
