Remarque in Paris

New York University and the Ecole Normale Superieure (NYU/ENS)

The Remarque Institute in Paris at the Department of History (ENS)

Starting September 2007, the Remarque Institute has extended its programs to the Ecole Normale Superieure in France. This Paris-based Remarque Institute will organize and support programming for the study of the Mediterranean and contemporary Europe in collaboration with the Department of History at ENS, where it will contribute to the European Doctorate in the Social History of the Mediterranean and Europe, within the framework of the Curie Programme of the European Commission.

The director of the Remarque Institute in Paris is Katherine Fleming, Professor of History at NYU. Jair Kessler, Assistant Director of the Remarque Institute, and Zvi Ben-Dor, Professor of the History of Islam at NYU, will also be part of the Remarque Institute in Paris.

The Remarque Institute in Paris will carry on the mission of the Remarque Institute in New York, notably to bring together young academics and non-academics to discuss contemporary issues not normally addressed by conventional academic programs and departments. In addition to a number of workshops, conferences and public lectures, there will be a regular lunch-time seminar. The inaugural presentation will be by Tony Judt, Director of the Remarque Institute in New York. He will speak on "Is Israel still good for the Jews?" (date to be announced).

As part of the partnership with Remarque, visiting ENS doctoral students and researchers will be provided with an office on the south side of Washington Square Park with full use of the NYU University Library and other resources. A studio apartment in university housing is also provided rent-free to the ENS visitors during the academic year. NYU faculty and graduates are encouraged to visit ENS as teachers, researchers, participants in seminars and conferences whenever they wish to do so.
