Volume before
The volume of the metal block (cube) can be found using the formula V=(side)(side)(side).
Since one side of the cube is 3.1 cm,
The volume of the cube is therefore (3.1)(3.1)(3.1) = 29.79 cu.cm. (about 30 cu.cm.)
Click on the image to see what happens when the cube is lowered into the water.
Notice that the cube displaced some of the water. The volume in the graduated cylinder has increased to 180 ml.
What was the amount of water displaced by the object?
What does this tell you about the volume of displaced water? The volume of the displaced water is the same as the volume of the cube.
