WREI - Congressional Fellowships on Women and Public Policy The Women's Research and Education Institute (WREI) Fellowship Program is designed to: 1) encourage more effective participation by women in the formulation of policy options that recognize the needs of all people; 2) promote activities that encourage the translation of research into policy; 3) raise the awareness that national and international issues concerning women are interdependent; and 4) increase understanding that those issues often defined as "women's issues" are, in fact, "human issues" of equal importance to both women and men. Congressional Fellowships on Women and Public Policy: Congressional Fellows spend nine months working in the offices of a member of Congress or on congressional committee staffs. Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program at an accredited institution in the U.S. Period: An intensive two-week orientation program for all Fellows begins on January 8, 2001, in Washington DC. Fellowship placement is from January 29 through August 31, 2001. Fellows are granted a semester break of 10 days in April or May, depending on House and Senate calendars. Stipend: Fellows receive a stipend of $1,150 per month for nine months of the academic year (January - September). An additional sum of $500 is provided for the purchase of health insurance.
