Harry S. Truman Library Institute--Fellowships, Grants and Awards To encourage study of the history of the Truman administration and the public career of Harry S. Truman and to promote the use of the Truman Library as a national center for historical scholarship, the Board of Directors of the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion of the use of the Library and its resources, offers grants-in-aid in following categories: 1. Dissertation Year Fellowships: Financial support will be given to graduate students who have substantially completed their research and be prepared to devote full time to writing their dissertation. Dissertation topics must be on some aspect of the life and career of Harry S. Truman or the public and foreign policy issues which were prominent during the Truman years. The annual stipend to be awarded is $16,000, payable in two installments, in September and January. The application deadline is February 1 (annually). 2. Research Grants: This category of grants is intended to enable graduate students as well as postdoctoral scholars to come to the Library for one to three weeks to use its facilities. Awards normally cover the cost of round-trip travel from a location within the U.S. to Independence, Missouri, and a modest sum to cover expenses. No grants will be made in excess of $2,500. Application deadlines are April 1 and October 1. 3. Scholar's Award: Every other year, in even-numbered years, the Institute will make an award, either to an established scholar or to a scholar about to embark on his or her career, who is engaged in a study of either the public career of Harry S. Truman or some aspect of the history of the Truman administration or of the U.S. during that administration. The scholar's work must be based on major utilization of the resources of the Library and must be designed to result in the publication of a book-length manuscript. The amount of the award will be based on a proposed budget submitted by the applicant, but will not exceed one-half of the applicant's academic year salary ( or a comparable figure in the case of persons not affiliated with an institution of higher learning. Grants range up to $30,000. Proposals must be submitted by December 15 of the year preceding the award year (odd numbered years). No person who has previously received this award will be considered a second time. Contact: Harry S.
