Social Science Research Council--Near and Middle East Fellowships Near and Middle East (Defined to include North Africa, the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Turkey, and for research projects on the period since the beginning of Islam. American Overseas Research Centers are located in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Syria [pending], Tunisia, Turkey, and Yemen. Research in the following countries cannot be supported at this time: Afghanistan, Lebanon, Libya, Algeria, Iran, and Iraq. Research projects must be concerned with the period since the beginning of Islam. Predissertation Research And Training: For graduate students who are US citizens and who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. degree program and will have completed at least two academic years of work toward the doctorate by June 30, 2000. These fellowships are not intended for students currently engaged in dissertation research or writing. Application deadline: November 1, 1999. Dissertation Fellowships: Fellowships are offered to graduate students to spend from four to nine months engaged in direct preparation for their dissertation research through training and study in the Middle East. Applications will only be accepted from graduate students working toward the Ph.D. in the social sciences and humanities. In most cases, fellowship recipients will be expected to affiliate with an American Overseas Research Center. American Overseas Research Centers are located in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Syria (pending), Tunisia, Turkey and Yemen. Full-time students who meet the above criteria, who are US citizens, who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who will have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation by June 30, 2000, are eligible to apply. Junior Faculty Tenure Support Fellowships: for scholars two to six years past the Ph.D. to pursue research in a Middle Eastern country for four to nine months of field work with an American Overseas Research Center. Application deadline: December 1 Mid-Career Skills Enrichment Program for Tenured Faculty: is for associate and full professors to spend four to nine months pursuing research in a Middle Eastern country in which they have not previously studied, and/or for training in a new field, discipline, or method.
