SSRC/ACLS--International Dissertation Field Research Fellowships These fellowships support humanists and social scientists conducting dissertation field research in all areas and regions of the world. The International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship Program helps promising scholars to launch their careers with substantive knowledge about societies, cultures, and/or polities outside the United States. The Fellowship promotes scholarship that treats place and setting in relation to global and transitional phenomena as well as particular histories and cultures. Eligibility: The program is open to full-time graduate students in the humanities and social sciences -- regardless of citizenship --enrolled in doctoral programs in the U.S. The program invites proposals for research that is comparative, cross-regional, and/or cross-cultural. Proposals that identify the U.S. as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals that require no field research outside the Unites States are not eligible. Period: Standard fellowships provide support for nine months in the field, plus travel expenses. In some cases, the candidate may propose less than nine months of field work, but no award will be given for less than six months. The fellowship must be held for a single continuous period within the 18 months between July 2000 and December 20001. Award: Stipends will rarely exceed $17,000.
