PromPeru--1998 Summer Research Program The Program offers a limited number of qualified students the opportunity to spend ten weeks in Lima conducting independent primary research in Lima on issues of public policy, education, tourism, communications, culture, economics and international relations concerning Peru. The program provides access to policy-makers, high-level government officials, Ministries and other state agencies, as well as to leaders in the private sector and in the international development community working in Peru. Suggested general research areas include: * Cultural heritage, tourism & sustainable development * Connectivity, precursors of development * Intellectual property * Market regulatory reform * The use of new technologies * El Nino phenomenon. Prevention & effects * Micro enterprises * Grass-root organizations * Internet * The planning of education * Agro-industry * Poverty * Amazonia & environmental issues Eligibility: Applicants must be studying for (or already possess) a graduate or professional degree. At least an intermediate-level knowledge of Spanish and strong writing skills in English or Spanish is required. Candidates must write a research paper on selected topic by the end of the program. Selected papers will be published in a bilingual collection and distributed to scholars and policy makers. Period: Ten weeks in Lima Award: Grants will cover round-trip airfare and loding in apartments shared with other participants. Deadline: February 28, 1998.
