Newberry Library-Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women The Newberry Library is an independent research library, free and open to the public, located on the north side of the city of Chicago. Founded in 1887, its holdings today number more than one and one-half million volumes and five million manuscripts in the humanities. The Newberry's collections concern the civilizations of western Europe and the Americas from the late middle ages to the early twentieth century. Areas of interests would include: American history and literature, discovery of the New World, the American West, local history, genealogy, family and social history, literature and history of the Midwest, especially the Chicago Renaissance, Native American history and literature. European history and literature: the Renaissance, the French Revolution, Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian history. History of cartography, history and theory of music, history of printing, linguistics. Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women: Each year the committee selects a woman scholar at the early stage of her career whose work gives clear promise of scholarly productivity and who would benefit significantly from six months of research, writing, and participation in the intellectual life of the Library. Eligibility: Applicants must be women holding the PhD and in the early stages of their academic careers. Open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Tenure of fellowship: Six months. Amount: $12,500 Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by January 20, 2000.
