Newberry Library Fellowships in the Humanities The Newberry Library is an independent research library, free and open to the public, located on the north side of the city of Chicago. Founded in 1887, its holdings today number more than one and one-half million volumes and five million manuscripts in the humanities. The Newberry's collections concern the civilizations of western Europe and the Americas from the late middle ages to the early twentieth century. Short-Term Resident Fellowships: The fellowships provide access to the Newberry's collections for those who live beyond commuting distance from Chicago. Areas of interests would include: American history and literature, discovery of the New World, the American West, local history, genealogy, family and social history, literature and history of the Midwest, especially the Chicago Renaissance, Native American history and literature. European history and literature: the Renaissance, the French Revolution, Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian history. History of cartography, history and theory of music, history of printing, linguistics. Eligibility: Applicants must have the PhD or have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation. Tenure of fellowship: Two weeks to two months; three months for those traveling from a foreign country. Amount: Monthly stipends vary from $800 to $1500. Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 1999.
