National Association of Truckstop Operators (NATSO) - Grants The NATSO Foundation is the educational, charitable and research affiliate of NATSO, Inc., the professional association of America's travel plaza and truckstop industry. The mission of the NATSO Foundation is to conduct research and create knowledge that will benefit the travel plaza and truckstop industry and secure its future; to provide educational opportunities to industry employees; and, to coordinate public outreach programs for the industry which benefit the general public and enhance the industry. Research Areas of Interest 1. Influences on the stopping decisions of professional truck drivers and the traveling public. 2. The relationship between fuel sales and sales at other truckstop profit centers. 3. The impact of the International Fuel Tax Agreement on the truckstop industry. 4. The impact and implications of point-of-sale technology on the truckstop industry. * Research projects are not limited to these areas, and any reasonable proposal will be considered as it relates to the truckstop and travel plaza industry. Eligibility: The principal investigator(s) must be one of the following: 1. Individual(s) holding full-time continuing academic staff appointments (Teaching and Research) with the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor or Professor at an academic institution. 2. Graduate student(s) enrolled full-time in an academic program in logistics, transportation or a related field. Award: Up to $10,000 available for this research. Expenditures may be made only for those costs identified in the application/proposal or in the final agreement with the NATSO Foundation. Funds may be used for such research activities as: travel to archives; travel to conduct interviews; administration and coding of survey instruments; mailing of survey instruments; secretarial services; and graduate assistant help. Deadline: Application materials must be received no later than April 9, 1999. A proposal no longer than 5 pages must include the following: 1. A title page including the name and current affiliation of the applicant and proposed title of the research project. 2. A study plan for accomplishing the research objectives, including specific tasks, methods of data collection, analysis approach, and completion of a research report as well as a timetable for accomplishing outlined tasks. 3. Curriculum vitae of principal investigator(s) (not to be counted against 5 page proposal length). Vitae should include a statement of how investigator's background prepares him or her to accomplish the research project. 4. A budget detailing how research award will be spent. 5. For proposals submitted by graduate students, a faculty sponsor must be identified and compensated with an honorarium ($500) from the research budget. The faculty sponsor will review the proposal and final report.
