Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts--S.H Kress Paired Fellowships The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, a part of the National Gallery of Art, announces a program for the Samuel H. Kress/Ailsa Mellon Bruce Paired Fellowship for Research in Conservation and Art History/Archaeology. Applications are invited from teams consisting of two scholars: one in the field of art history, archaeology, or another related discipline in the humanities or social sciences, and one in the field of conservation or materials science. The fellowship includes a two-month period for field, collections, and/or laboratory research, followed by a two-month residency period at the Center for Advanced Study. Paired fellows are provided with a study and will have access to the notable resources represented by the collections, the library, and the photographic archives of the Gallery, as well as the Library of Congress and other specialized research libraries and collections in Washington. Laboratory facilities in the Washington area may be made available on an ad hoc basis. Qualifications and Selection The Samuel H. Kress/Ailsa Mellon Bruce Paired Fellowship for Research in Conservation and Art History/Archaeology is open to those who have held the appropriate terminal degree for five years or more. An equivalent record of professional accomplishment, in exceptional cases, may fulfill this requirement. Awards will be made without regard to the age or nationality of the applicants. Applications are reviewed by an external Selection Committee composed of scholars in the history of art, archaeology, conservation, and materials science. Two paired fellowships (supporting four individuals) will be awarded annually. Tenure Paired fellows spend two months conducting field, collections, and/or laboratory research, followed by two months in residency at the Center for discussion, research, and writing. The first segment of the fellowship may involve activities such as travel to visit collections or sites and/or consultation with other scholars. Fellows are expected to reside in Washington throughout the two months of the second segment or residency period, and to participate in the activities of the Center. Support Each member of the team will receive a stipend of $5,500 for each of the two segments for a total of $11,000, in addition to an allowance of up to $3,000 for research travel conducted during the first segment of the fellowship and up to $1,000 for round-trip travel to Washington for the second segment or residency period. In addition, each team will receive an allowance of up to $5,000 for research materials, materials analyses, photography, or other project-related research expenses. It is expected that one copy of all photographs made for the project will be given to the National Gallery photographic archives. Deadline: Applications are due in early March.
