Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts--Predoctoral Fellowships The following ten fellowships are intended to support doctoral dissertation research. Applicants must have completed their residence requirements and coursework for the Ph.D. as well as general or preliminary examinations before the date of application. Students must have certification of competence in two foreign languages. Applicants must be either United States citizens or enrolled in a university in the United States. Application for these fellowships may be made only through the chair of graduate departments of art history and other appropriate departments Departments should limit nominations to one candidate for each category of fellowship. David E. Finley Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 36 months, usually a two-year period for travel and research in Europe on a well-advanced dissertation in Western art and an additional year in residence at the National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, to complete the dissertation. Half of the year in residence will be devoted to a research project, designed to complement the subject of the dissertation, at the Gallery or other Washington-area collections. A primary requirement for the award of this fellowship is that the candidate have a significant interest in museum work, which could be furthered during travel to visit European and other collections as well as during the period of residency at the Center in Washington; there is, however, no requirement as to the candidate's subsequent choice of a career. Paul Mellon Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 36 months. The fellowship is intended for the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation in Western art and to enable a candidate to reside abroad and develop expertise in a specific city, locality, or region related to the dissertation. After a two-year period of residence abroad, the Paul Mellon Fellow is expected to spend the third year in residence at the Center to complete the dissertation. Samuel H. Kress Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 24 months, to be held partly in residence at the National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and partly elsewhere in the United States or abroad. The fellowship is intended for the advancement or completion of a doctoral dissertation in Western art. The Kress Fellow is expected to spend one year of the fellowship period on dissertation research, and one year at the Center to complete the dissertation and devote half-time to Gallery research projects designed to complement the subject of the dissertation and to provide curatorial experience. Kress Fellows may apply for a postdoctoral curatorial fellowship if the dissertation has been accepted by 1 June of the second fellowship year. Mary Davis Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 24 months. The fellowship is intended for the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation in Western art. The Davis Fellow is expected to spend one year of the fellowship period on dissertation research abroad, and one year at the Center to complete the dissertation and devote half-time to Gallery research projects designed to complement the subject of the dissertation and to provide curatorial experience. Davis Fellows may apply for a postdoctoral curatorial fellowship if the dissertation has been accepted by 1 June of the second year of the fellowship. Wyeth Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 24 months. The fellowship is intended for the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation. The fellowship is intended for the study of the visual arts of the United States before 1945. The Wyeth Fellow is expected to spend one year of the fellowship period on dissertation research in the United States or abroad, and one year at the Center to complete the dissertation. Ittleson Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 24 months. The fellowship is intended for the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation in a field other than Western art. The Ittleson Fellow is expected to spend one year of the fellowship period on dissertation research abroad, and one year at the Center to complete the dissertation. Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 annually for 24 months. The fellowship is intended for the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation in a field other than Western art. The Andrew W. Mellon Fellow is expected to spend one year of the fellowship period on dissertation research abroad, and one year at the Center to complete the dissertation. Robert H. and Clarice Smith Fellowship One fellowship of $16,000 for 12 months, for research in Dutch or Flemish art, intended for the advancement or completion either of a doctoral dissertation or of a resulting publication. The Smith Fellow may use the grant to study either in the United States or abroad; there are no residence requirements at the National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Chester Dale Fellowships Two fellowships of $16,000 each for 12 months. The fellowship is usually intended for the advancement or completion of a doctoral dissertation in Western art. The Dale Fellow may use the grant to study either in the United States or abroad; there are no residence requirements at the National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Departments should limit nominations to one candidate for each category of fellowship. Each interested student should consult with the dissertation advisor and department chair to obtain departmental sponsorship. Nomination forms must be completed by the student and the chair of the department. These forms are available from the chairs of graduate departments with Ph.D. programs.
