National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)--Graduate Fellowships The NCAR Advanced Study Program offers graduate fellowships that support university Ph.D. thesis research conducted in collaboration with NCAR scientists. Usually, these fellowships are restricted to research projects that require facilities or expertise available at NCAR but not at the collaborating university. Eligibility: The research project at NCAR must be supervised by jointly by a university faculty member and an NCAR scientist who agree to collaborate in this endeavor. Project must be conducted mostly at NCAR (except when participation in observing programs requires residence elsewhere). For this to be possible course work and the comprehensive exam (or equivalent) at the home university must be completed before the start of the fellowship. Contributions of the Fellow's Home University: The home university of the Fellow is expected to contribute by waiving or otherwise providing for the student's university tuition by making any faculty appointments meeded so that the NCAR scientist can be an official member of the student's advisory committee. Stipend: The current annual stipend is $15,695. Some benefits are also provided, and some travel costs (normally less than $1200 per year) are provided for travel between NCAR and the home university and for travel to scientific meetings. An additional limited allowance is available to support moving to NCAR. Tuition is not supported by the fellowships, therefore alternate support for tuition must be provided by the university or the Fellow. Deadline: Rolling application deadline. Applications should include: (1) a brief scientific proposal (no to exceed 5 pages); (2) a proposed schedule for completion of the project (not to exceed 2.5 years; (3) a list of requirements for any needed NCAR facilities including computer support; (4) biographical information for the student that includes educational background and experience relevant to the proposed research; (5) supporting endorsements from the prospective research supervisors at the home university and at NCAR; (6) a transcript of graduate course work; and (7) the names of two references (other than university and NCAR advisors) whom NCAR can contact as references.
