NASA--Earth System Science Fellowship Program The Earth System Science Fellowship Program (ESSFP): The purpose is to ensure continued training of interdisciplinary scientist to support the study of Earth as a system. The fellowship program is designed for people pursuing a Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Earth System Science. The near-term (1996-2000) scientific priorities of NASA's Mission to the Planet Earth include: Seasonal-to-Interannual Climate Prediction, Long-term Climate Variability, Land Cover Change and Global Productivity, Atmospheric Ozone, and Natural Hazards. Eligibility: Applicants who have been admitted to or already in a full-time M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. program at an accredited U.S. university are eligible to apply. An individual accepting this award may not concurrently receive other Federal funds, including funds from other Federal fellowships or traineeships. However, NASA may allow an applicant receiving Fellowship Supplements from other U.S. Federal agencies to cover expenses not covered by NASA's educational fellowships. Period: The fellowship is for one year and may be renewed annually for a total of three years. Awards: An annual award per graduate student cannot exceed $22,000. This amount includes a $16,000 (maximum) student stipend and an allowance of up to $6,000 consisting of $3,000 for student expenses and $3,000 for university expenses. The student allowance may be used to help defray tuition costs, purchase books and software, or to provide per dim and travel for the student. It may also be used to help defray living expenses during periods of Center residency.
