Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies The Mellon Fellowships, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, have two primary objectives: (1) to help exceptionally promising students to prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic studies by providing top-level, competitive, portable awards, and (2) to contribute thereby to the continuity of teaching and research of the highest order in America's colleges and universities. The fields of study include: American Studies, Art History, Classics, Comparative Literature, Cultural Anthropology, English Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Musicology, Philosophy, Political Philosophy and Religious Studies. Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must be admitted to a Ph.D. program. The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) results are required by each applicant. Results from the November 7, 1998 tests or tests taken within the last five years will be accepted. Results should be directed to GRE Code 1491, Mellon Fellowships in Humanities. Period: The nine-month academic year. Award: The stipend will be $14,500 plus tuition and mandated fees. Fellows may not accept supplemental awards or institutional awards or teaching assistantships during the nine-month period. Deadline: Request for application materials must be received by December 7, 1998. Completed applications must be postmarked by December 31, 1998.
