Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program The World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP), now known as the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), for graduate studies in subjects related to development. Scholarships are awarded to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at recognized universities throughout member countries of the Bank. Applicants must propose a program of study related to development at the master's or doctoral level, in fields such as economics, finance, planning, health, population, agriculture, environment and natural resource management, civil engineering, education, and other development-related subjects. Evidence of admission (copies of formal acceptance letters), or proof of applications (copies of completed application forms) to two universities located in any World Bank member country. Eligibility: Applicants must be a national from a World Bank member country, be under the age of 45, and preferably under 35 years of age. Also, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree or its equivalent in a development-related field. Applicants must have at least 2, preferably 4 to 5 years of full-time professional experience usually in the home country. Stipend: Tuition, administrative fees, and the cost of basic medical and accident insurance usually obtained through the university. An economy class air travel ticket between home country and the host university at the start of the study program and one return journey following the end of the overall scholarship period, is provided. In addition, scholars receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip. A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books. Deadline: February 1, 1998. Application forms for the 1998 selection cycle of the regular JJ/WBGSP (in English, French, and Spanish) will be available from the JJ/WBGSP Secretariat at World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC from September 1997 through January 1998. Application forms will also be available at World Bank Resident Missions and field offices in many countries during the same period.
