Howard Hughes Medical Institute--Research Scholars Program HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program (Cloister Program) The goal of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students is to strengthen and expand the nation's pool of medically trained researchers. The program is designed to enable selected medical students with an interest in fundamental research to spend a year at intensive work in a research laboratory. Research Scholars Program: brings selected medical students to NIH for a year's research experience in the intramural program. This exposure to outstanding scientists and demanding laboratory environments strongly reinforces the student's interest in research conducted at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Eligibility: There are no citizenship requirements. The Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students are available to students currently enrolled in M.D. or D.O. degree programs in medical schools in the U.S. Students may apply during any year of their medical studies, but applicants applicants in the fourth year of medical school must defer graduation until completion of the fellowship year. Students enrolled in MD/PhD degree programs or who hold the PhD are not eligible. Applications from women and minorities are strongly encouraged. Period: The appointment is for nine months to one year, with an opportunity for some scholars to extend for an additional year of research. Stipend: The annual salary for scholars is $17,800. Research scholars are employees of HHMI and are eligible for certain employee benefits. There is no special research allowance. Costs are covered by the scholar's laboratory. The Cloister, a residential facility for scholars, is available on the NIH campus. Travel to and from Bethesda is provided. Deadline: January 10, 1999. Students may apply to either the HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program or HHMI Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students Program in a given year, not both.
