Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States by providing opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad. Under the program, the Secretary awards fellowships, through institutions of higher education, to doctoral candidates who propose to conduct dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Eligibility: An individual is eligible to apply for a fellowship if the individual is 1) a US citizen or national of the U.S.; 2) a permanent resident of the U.S.; 3) is a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education; 4) is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program at time of fellowship period; 5) is planning a teaching career in the U.S.; and 6) posses sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the dissertation project. Period: A maximum of twelve months, but not fewer than six months. Stipend: The stipend will cover; travel expenses, a maintenance stipend for the individual and dependents related to cost of living in host country, an allowance for research-related expenses, health and accident insurance and other costs.
