Dumbarton Oaks--Fellowships for Byzantine and Pre-Columbian Studies Dumbarton Oaks offers residential fellowships in three areas of study: Byzantine Studies (including related aspects of late Roman, early Christian, western medieval, Slavic, and Near Eastern studies), Pre-Columbian Studies (of Mexico, Central America, and Andean South America), and Studies in Landscape Architecture. 1. Junior Fellowships: for students who at the time of application have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for a Ph.D. (or appropriate final degree) and will be working on a dissertation or final project at Dumbarton Oaks under the direction of a faculty member at their own university. In exceptional cases, applications may be accepted from students before they have fulfilled preliminary requirements. 2. Fellowships for scholars who hold a doctorate (or appropriate final degree) or have established themselves in their field and wish to pursue their own research. Applications will also be accepted from graduate students who expect to have the Ph.D. in hand prior to taking up residence at Dumbarton Oaks. (Successful applicants will revert to the status and stipend of Junior Fellows if the degree has not been conferred.) 3. 2001 Summer Fellowships: for Byzantine or Pre-Columbian scholars on any level of advancement. Summer Fellowships are awarded for a period of six to nine weeks. Period: Fellowships and Junior Fellowships are awarded for the academic year. During this time recipients are expected to be in residence at Dumbarton Oaks and to devote full-time to their study projects. Awards may also be made for single terms (either Sept.-Jan., or Jan.-May). Awards: Fellowship awards range from an equivalent of approximately $18,310 for an unmarried Junior Fellow to a maximum of $39,300 for a Fellow from abroad accompanied by family members. Support includes a stipend of $13,720 for a Junior Fellows or $25,000 for a Fellow for the full academic year. Housing, research expense, health insurance and travel reimbursement will be provided. Summer fellowship provides a maintenance allowance of $190 per week; housing in a Dumbarton Oaks apartment or at the Fellows Building; lunch on weekdays; health insurance; and travel expense reimbursement.
