Council for European Studies Pre-Dissertation Fellowships: The purpose of this fellowship is to enable graduate students in the social science disciplines to pursue short-term, exploratory research in Western or Southern Europe in order to determine the viability and to better define the scope of their proposed dissertations. Eligible disciplines are: anthropology, (excluding archaeology), economics, history (post-1750 only), geography, politics, and sociology. Eligibility: students who are advanced in their dissertation research or whose dissertation proposals have received formal approval from their academic department are ineligible. Pre-Dissertation Fellowships on Topics Related to the European Union: This fellowship is intended to serve the same purpose as the Pre-Dissertation Fellowship. The eligibility criteria is the same as those above, with the addition of the following: Proposed topics may address any aspect of European integration, including subjects related to the Treaties of Paris, Rome, and Maastricht, as well as the Single European Act. Doctoral candidates in economics, history, political science, and sociology are eligible. Fellowships are open to US citizens or permanent residents as well as citizens of Canada. Stipend: $3,000 towards travel and living expenses. Deadline: Applications must be requested by January 15. Materials must be submitted by February 1 (annually).
