Columbia University - Society of Fellows in the Humanities The aim of the Columbia Society of Fellows in the Humanities is to enhance the role of the humanities in the University by exploring and clarifying the interrelationships within the humanities as well as their relationship to the natural and social sciences and the several professions. Society of Fellows in the Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowships 2001-02: Mellon Fellowships: Mellon fellows are appointed for one year. The appointment is ordinarily renewed for a second year. Each fellow teaches a section of one of the introductory courses in general education: Contemporary Civilization, Literature Humanities, Music Humanities, Art Humanities, Asian Civilizations, or Asian Humanities. Major Cultures Fellowship: This fellowship will focus on the teaching and research of the cultures and civilizations of Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The fellow is appointed for one non-renewable year at a rank equivalent to that of lecturer and will teach one section each semester of an introductory course in the Major Cultures requirement. Eligibility: Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree between January 1, 1995 and July 1, 2001. Period: The entire 2001-2002 academic year. Stipend: The stipend will be $35,000, one half for independent research and one half for teaching in the undergraduate program in general education. An additional $2,000 is available to support research needs. Full fringe benefits will be added. Deadline: October 15, 2000. All completed applications must be accompanied by a $20.00 processing fee.
