California Senate Associates Program The California Senate Associates Program grew out of a desire to provide people of all ages, experience and backgrounds with insight into the legislative process. The primary goals of the program are to provide exposure to the legislative process for participants and research and administrative staff assistance to Senate members and policy committees. Associates are expected to have strong interests in public policy and politics, but prior legislative experience is not required. A four-week orientation at the beginning of the program provides background on state government, the legislative process and key issues. Associates also participate in weekly graduate seminars conducted by California State University, Sacramento. Eligibility: Anyone who has graduated from a four-year college by June, 1998, may apply. There is no preferred major and there is no need to be a recent graduate. Individuals with advanced degrees, or those in mid-career, are encouraged to apply. Period: Eleven months Stipend: Associates receive stipends of $1,707 per month during the eleven-month program as well as health and dental benefits. Deadline: Application materials must be postmarked by February 18, 1998.
