AAAS--EPA Environmental Science and Engineering Summer Fellowships The program is designed to provide an opportunity to learn first-hand how scientific and technological information is used in environmental policy-making in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Broad areas of research interest within the EPA include human and environmental risk assessment; environmental socioeconomic concerns; hazardous air pollutants; and innovative technologies such as green technologies, to name a few. Summer Environmental Fellowships: Fellows will work at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington, D.C. for 10 weeks in the summer as special research consultants. The detailed, future-oriented research assists EPA in assessing the significance of long-range environmental problems. The program is coordinated by EPA's National Center for Environmental Research and Quality Assurance (NCERQA) within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). Eligibility: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level degree at the time of application. Persons with a master's degree in engineering and at least three years post-degree experience may also apply. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Federal employees are not eligible for the fellowships. Period: The fellowship program begins in early June and ends in early August, for a total of ten weeks. Stipend: A weekly stipend of $1,000, with allowances for relocation and professional travel. Deadline: All applications must be postmarked by January 15, 1998. In addition to the application materials required, applicants to the Summer Environmental Fellowship Program are asked to write an essay that describes and justifies a topic they would like to pursue during their fellowship. This topic should address a current or anticipated environmental problem of relevance to EPA's mission. The essay should not exceed two typed pages.
