In this poster for Zen perfume, Makoto Nakamura merges old and new, silhouetting a modern photograph of a temple rooftop at sunset against a view of Mount Fuji from a woodblock print by the ukiyo-e master Hokusai. The country’s most beloved landmark, Mount Fuji symbolizes Japan in much the same way that the Eiffel Tower does France. Here its dramatic peak dominates the visual field, while the poster’s bottom section features a perfume bottle on a stark white background. The name "Zen" appears in calligraphic kanji characters at the upper right, under Shiseido’s camellia trademark and Japanese logo.
