Another
member of the Utagawa school, the artist who designed this print updates
conventions of the calendar series. This November scene juxtaposes two views: a
cityscape and the silhouetted closeup of a woman who wears fashionable Western
garments while her features are depicted in the traditional simplified style of
the Utagawa school. Shown in plunging perspective are horse-drawn trams, modern
buildings, and the electric lines that soon dominated the Shimbashi district,
which is adjacent to Ginza. The prominent flag at the upper right—the Hinomaru,
or Rising Sun—attests to the increase in nationalistic fervor just prior to
the Russo-Japanese war (1904–1905).
