Shiseido’s first extant advertisement, this 1877 flyer announces that the store stocks Western-manufactured prescription drugs. Arinobu Fukuharu had established his pharmacy five years earlier, in the new, modern Ginza quarter that had been rebuilt with brick shops and wide streets following a devastating fire in 1873. The text incorporates the English "chemists and druggists" as well as the German "Apotheke" (apothecary)—even then, Germany was a leading pharmaceuticals manufacturer.
