In 1927 Reika Sawa reworked Sue Yabe’s original design for Shiseido wrapping paper. While wrapping papers had been offered before, this one marked a concerted effort to consolidate a promotional device equivalent to today’s shopping bags. Available exclusively at the Ginza store, the paper became famous, spreading a consistent corporate image throughout Tokyo’s streets. Greatly influenced by the Art Nouveau sensibility of English artist Aubrey Beardsley, Yabe had modeled his 1924 design directly on one of his prints. Beardsley’s enthusiastic incorporation of Japanese influences in his own work may have bolstered its appeal for Yabe. Sawa added stylized camellias, further refining the design.
