Jakapan Vilasineekul (born 1964) received a B.F.A.
in sculpture from Silpakorn University, Bangkok, and
continued his studies in Karlsruhe, Germany, at the
Staatliche Akademie der Bildenen Kunst. His sculptures
often are based on Thai proverbs and are subtly political
in inflection. His work has been included in group
exhibitions in Thailand since the early 1980s and is
increasingly seen in other Southeast Asian countries.
He lives and works in Bangkok and teaches at
Silpakorn University.

Jakapan Vilasineekul exhibits Chang Thai Thang Tua Auw
Bai Bua Pid (In Thailand You Can Cover a Dead Elephant
with a Lotus Leaf) (1993-94). Using a Thai proverb describing
a cover-up of wrong doing, the artist presents a map of
Thailand in a cage, in reaction to military violence against Thai
citizens in May 1992, which resulted in countless dead and
missing bodies.
