Bhupen Khakhar was born in 1934 in Bombay,
and is a respected member of an older generation
of modern painters. Originally a chartered accountant,
he turned to art in 1962, studying at the Faculty of
Fine Arts in Baroda. He has had one-person shows
in London and Paris and was included in the most
recent Documenta in Kassel, Germany. As an openly
gay man living in India, Mr. Khakhar is assessing the
state of homosexuality in his home country.
