Department of East Asian Studies -- New York University

THE MAJOR PROGRAM

Prerequisite: All East Asian Studies majors—as well as students planning to major in EAS—must complete one of the following courses in fulfillment of MAP World Cultures requirements. This is a pre-requisite to the major and is best fulfilled at the beginning of the major. The World Cultures prerequisite does not count in the credit total for the major.

V55.0506 World Cultures: Chinese and Japanese Traditions
V55.0507 World Cultures: Japan
V55.0512 World Cultures: China
V55.0535 World Cultures: Korea

No other World Cultures courses will be considered as fulfilling this pre-requisite, including GSP’s Eastern Civilization or equivalent. Transfers from GSP must take one of the above-listed courses.

The major consists of 32 credits. The program leads to an East Asian Studies humanities major in one of two ways:

  1. Language major: Students must complete one language (Chinese, Korean, or Japanese) through the Advanced II level; major credits begin to count with the Intermediate I level (Elementary I & II do not count in the major credit total). In addition to the fulfillment of the language component, students also must take non-language courses from among the East Asian Studies offerings. Normally, the program consists of Intermediate I & II, Advanced I & II in the language, plus four non-language courses. Limited flexibility is permitted, although no compromise on language levels will be permitted. Exceptions are only granted at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
  2. Non-language major: Students may take 32 credits of non-language East Asian Studies courses. In this version, no language courses will count towards the major.

Notes:

  1. The Program in Asian/Pacific/American Studies cross-lists courses with the East Asian Studies Department. Only those cross-listed courses will count towards the EAS major.
  2. An upper limit of 16 credits can be transferred from outside NYU. This includes non-NYU study abroad credits as well as credits from other universities in the United States.
  3. Cantonese, Vietnamese and Tibetan languages may not be counted toward either major or minor requirements.
  4. NYU-in-Shanghai courses are counted towards the major only contingently.
  5. At least 8 of the 16 non-language credits must be taken at the New York NYU campus.
  6. Courses listed as “electives” do not count towards the major; Freshman honors seminars may count towards the major, although the specific seminar must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
  7. No double-counting of courses will be permitted. Courses to be counted towards the EAS major must be exclusive to the EAS major, whether or not they are cross-listed with another department.

THE MINOR PROGRAM

The minor consists of 16 credits. The program leads to an East Asian Studies humanities minor in one of two ways.

  1. Four non-language courses in East Asian Studies alone.
  2. A language minor can be obtained by taking one language (Chinese, Korean or Japanese) through the Advanced II level. Elementary I & II do not count toward fulfilling the minor requirements.

A student's minor program can sometimes be determined individually in consultation with the director of undergraduate studies.

Notes:

  1. If Advanced II level of the target language is reached prior to fulfilling the 16 credits, the student’s program can be configured flexibly to fulfill the remaining credits.
  2. Transfer credits are not accepted for the minor.
