INDEPENDENT STUDY

Independent Study is approved under the following conditions:

  • The courses/topics must be primarily non-language based.
  • The courses/topics must be unavailable or not offered as regularly scheduled East Asian civilization courses.

Independent Study for the Honors Program is completed in the senior year. Students should register for the following courses:

V33.0997 Independent Study (4 credits)
Taken during a student's first semester of the senior year. Student must define a chosen thesis topic, develop a bibliography, read broadly and begin research while working individually with the faculty member hwo will be supervising the thesis. At the end of the first semester, students are to submit a well-defined proposal for their honors thesis, complete with a bibliography and a rough draft of the thesis.

V33.0998 Independent Study (4 credits)
Taken during a student's final semester. Complete a 25-30 page double spaced, typed paper, while continuing to work individually with an EAS faculty member.

These four-credit Independent Study courses will be in addition to the major requirements.
