A revised NYU Policy on Distinguishing Between Gifts and Sponsored Awards is available at http://www.nyu.edu/osp/policies/giftsvsawards.php
The distinction is important at the proposal stage since the required approvals differ for the two types of resulting awards. In cases where the proposal leads to an award, it is necessary that funds coming into the University be correctly identified as either gifts or sponsored activity both for audit and accounting purposes, and also because the offices that track them have different reporting and compliance requirements. If in doubt, consult your Projects Officer in the Office of Sponsored Programs. The determination as to whether a specific award should be treated as a gift or a sponsored award will be made in consultation with the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations and the Controller's Division.
Procedures regarding the routing of papework and depositing of funds for awards will be distributed shortly.
