Travel Workshop

Mandatory (either online or at the OISS) for all F-1 and J-1 students receiving their first NYU travel signature. Students who have already attended a travel workshop may get an updated signature from an OISS advisor during walk-in hours. This workshop is designed to inform international students of the requirements for traveling outside of and returning to the U.S. in valid F-1 or J-1 student status. Other topics discussed include: travel to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean and renewal of F-1 and J-1 visas. OISS travel certification is given at the end of the workshop; accordingly you must bring your passport, I-94 card, and I-20 or DS-2019 form to receive travel certification. J-1 students who received their DS-2019 from a sponsoring organization such as Fulbright must obtain their travel signature from their sponsor.

F-1 Off-Campus Employment Options
Work BEFORE completion of program

This workshop covers off-campus employment options for continuing, full-time students in valid F-1 status. Topics covered include eligibility criteria and application procedures for F-1 off-campus employment, including pre-completion optional practical training, curricular practical training, and economic need employment.

F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training Workshop
Work AFTER completion of program

F-1 students who have or are nearing completion of degree requirements may be eligible for post-completion optional practical training, which allows up to 12 months of employment authorization. All F-1 students should attend (or view the online workshop) in their final semester of study. You will learn about eligibility criteria, application procedure, the Department of Homeland Security's strict deadlines, and travel after completion of studies.

You must apply for post-completion OPT no later than four weeks after you complete your degree requirements to allow for adequate processing time. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will not accept applications received 60 days or more beyond the completion date. You must be physically present in the U.S. to file for post-completion OPT. The OISS advises students not to travel outside the U.S. while the post-completion OPT application is pending.
