About the OISS

The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) provides comprehensive support and advisory services for New York University's international students, scholars, and their dependents. The OISS is the University's liaison to the United States departments of State and Homeland Security, and is the University's designee for ensuring institutional compliance with U.S. immigration regulations.

Our office assists members of the NYU international community with matters of special concern and serves as a referral source to other University offices and academic departments.

Among the services provided by the OISS:

  • Immigration support for international students eligible for NYU's sponsorship under the F-1 or J-1 visa classifications
  • Advising services for international students through Advisor-on-Duty walk-in hours, weekly immigration workshops, a weekly electronic newsletter, and individual appointments
  • Information workshops sponsored by the OISS and given by immigration attorneys and non-resident alien tax specialists, on a periodic basis
  • Online, multimedia workshops covering topics like the visa application process, travel and employment
  • Comprehensive immigration and advising services for international scholars and faculty through International Scholars Services.
  • Programs and events for students and scholars designed to facilitate international exchange, mutual understanding, cross-cultural awareness
  • Social groups and English-language classes for the spouses and partners of international students and scholars
  • An International Alumni Network to allow NYU's international alumni to maintain contact with one another and with NYU

Guide to OISS Services

Walk-In Hours
New and continuing international students may see an OISS international student advisor on a walk-in basis during set times. These are brief meetings with advisors taken on a first-come, first-served basis. If issues discussed during a walk-in session requires more time, you will be asked to schedule an appointment. Please check the OISS homepage for the current schedule..

STUDENT IMMIGRATION WORKSHOPS
The OISS offers a variety of immigration workshops regarding the following topics. Students are required to attend an OISS workshop prior to seeing an OISS advisor for certain types of information or immigration benefits. All workshops are available on line through the OISS website.

  • Travel Workshop : for F-1 and J-1 international students who need their first travel endorsement from NYU. (Students who have already attended a Travel Workshop and received their first travel endorsement may obtain updated travel endorsements from an OISS advisor during AOD Hours).
  • F-1 Off-Campus Employment Workshop : for F-1 students who wish to seek off-campus employment while pursuing full-time studies at NYU.
  • F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training Workshop : for F-1 students who wish to seek practical training following completion of studies at NYU.

  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISOR APPOINTMENTS
Students in unique situations who require more individualized service are encouraged to make an appointment with an OISS advisor by emailing their school liaison.
