Off-Campus Housing
Although it is convenient to live in university housing, many international students prefer to live in off-campus residences. Finding housing in the New York City area is a challenge. Searching for off-campus housing can be time consuming and frustrating, yet many students decide to live off campus in order to have more privacy or to save money. The neighborhoods in Manhattan, the surrounding boroughs and New Jersey offer considerable variety in lifestyle and amenities. It is important to keep in mind how long your commute (daily trip) to NYU will be from the area in which you live.

Help Yourself to Housing in New York City, published by Metro International and available at the OISS, includes descriptions of the various neighborhoods in New York City. It acquaints you with the terms used in classified advertisements, items to check when inspecting an apartment, and information about signing a lease. In addition, the NYU Off-Campus Housing Office publishes the NYU Off-Campus Guidebook, which will provide more information on how to obtain off-campus housing. Students can pick up a guidebook at the

Additional services OCHO provides includes workshops on apartment hunting topics, an off-campus housing registry, and an agreement with Citi-Habitats to engage the services of that brokerage firm at a reduced fee.

You must have a valid NYU ID or admission letter to use OCHO. Available apartments are described in the classified advertisements in newspapers such as The New York Times and The Village Voice as well as in some neighborhood papers. For information on New Jersey, you may also wish to consult the advertisements in The Star Ledger. There are many brokers or real estate agencies that locate apartments for a fee equal to or more than one month's rent.
