Student Health Center

The Student Health Center (SHC) is located on the third and fourth floors of 726 Broadway, three blocks east of Washington Square Park. The general information number is (212) 443-1000 or visit their website. All NYU students, regardless of insurance coverage, can use the Student Health Center. If you live in Manhattan or are in Manhattan at the time of an illness and you are covered by the NYU-sponsored heath insurance, you are required to seek treatment first at the Student Health Center. The only exception to this is in case of a medical emergency.

The Student Health Center is unable to provide services or treat family members of students.

A scheduled appointment in Primary Care Services is the best way to use the Student Health Center. To schedule an appointment, call (212) 443-1000 and select the"appointments" option. If you cannot make an appointment, you may visit SHC Urgent Care Services. In either case, it is important to bring your NYU ID card and your insurance card with you. When you arrive, you will be given a registration form to complete. You will first be sent to "triage" to meet briefly with a nurse who will do a primary assessment of your health. In Urgent Care Services, patients are seen based on severity of illness, as determined by the nurse, so do not be alarmed if someone who comes in after you is seen first.

If you have a condition the at the Student Health Center cannot treat, they will refer you to another health care provider or, if appropriate, to a hospital. If you are covered under the NYU-sponsored plan, you must go to a SHC-recommended provider to obtain the maximum insurance benefit for any treatment you receive. If you go to a provider who is not a "preferred provider," the insurance plan may reimburse you at a greatly reduced rate or not at all.

In the case of a life or limb-threatening situation, you should call 911 as soon as possible to contact local emergency services. For other emergencies, call NYU Public Safety at (212) 998-2222. You will be connected with the Tisch Hospital Emergency Room, where a physician will provide advice over the telephone. The physician will determine if you need to go to the emergency room or can wait to see a health care provider at the Student Heath Center the following day.

All NYU students may use the Student Health Center, regardless of their type of insurance coverage. If the Student Health Center has an agreement with your private insurance company, it will be billed directly, and you will be responsible for paying any balance. If there is no relationship, you may be required to pay at the time of service.
