Opportunity Programs: Arthur O. Eve HEOP/CSTEP Counseling and Student Activities 

The Arthur O. Eve HEOP/CSTEP student body includes 800 students – 200 freshman and 600 upper division students who represent each of 8 undergraduate academic divisions [Steinhardt School of Education, College of Nursing, College of Arts and Science, Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Tisch School of the Arts, The General Studies Program, Stern School of Business and the School of Social Work]

v      Pre-Freshman Seminar (Summer)
Provides an academic and social orientation for incoming program students. Students are assisted with the transition from high-school to university with a curriculum which focuses on enhancing academic skills; Students are oriented to university offices and to the campus climate; Students have the opportunity to interact with fellow program students over the course of this 6-week seminar.

 

v      Freshman Seminars (Fall and Spring)

Seminar classes are geared towards promoting academic success throughout program students’ 1st and 2nd semesters at NYU. These sessions provide weekly opportunities for students to address concerns pertinent to academics, financial aid, career exploration and the campus climate as well as social issues within a group context.  Attendance is requisite for all freshman program students.

v      Individual Counseling Sessions

1-on-1 meetings scheduled approximately 2-5 times each semester to address personal, academic, social, career related and financial concerns; Also a means of monitoring academic progress. 1-on-1 meetings are available to all program students.

v      Drop-in Counseling Sessions/Special Appointments

In addition to regularly scheduled appointments, students are able to utilize counseling services on a drop-in basis  in times of emergency as well as to request information and/or feedback and to update counselors on their current status.

 

v      Liaison Structure

Counselors, who also serve as program liaisons with designated university schools/offices, maintain contacts with advisors in various academic departments and participate in university events, which facilitates communication and inter-office initiatives in order to meet students’ needs throughout the academic year.

v      Overview

The OP Student Resource and Learning Center encapsulates services geared towards promoting academic success as well as social and personal well-being; Offers structured and semi-structured workshops and activities that are designed to supplement the supportive services that are offered to Arthur O. Eve HEOP and CSTEP students. Services that are offered through this division include Peer Mentoring; Outings and Field Trips; Advocacy Involvement; Peer Study/Support Groups; Comprehensive Writing Assistance; Lunch Time Series Seminar (which help students to develop academic and marketable skills); a Public Speaking Club and Debate Team (for students interested in developing public speaking, presentation, research and editing skills) Vibe (Open Discussion) Sessions and Pre-Med Tuesdays’ Seminars (for students who are interested in pursuing Medical School and/or the Medical/Health professions). The activities, services and workshops available through this division are open to all program students.

 

v      Opportunity Programs Student Newsletter (OPSN)

OPSN publishes articles and other works (i.e. poetry) submitted by the program’s students. It is also a way of disseminating information pertaining to student activities, resources and new initiatives.

 

v      Science Initiative

Programming and specialized support services targeted for students who plan to pursue careers in the licensed health, medical or scientific professions.

 

v      NYU Blackboard sites

Program students are kept abreast of announcements and upcoming events via the Opportunity Programs Student Activities and Special Projects and Science Initiative Blackboard sites.
