| Important Notice Regarding Cell Phones and Registration
To register via Albert you must enter a domestic or international cell phone number in Albert. This is because student safety is a top priority at NYU, and the university will then be able to send you a text message in the event of an emergency. If a cell phone number is not listed, you will not be able to register. If you do not yet have a cell phone you must remove the hold by going to Student Services at 25 West 4th Street or 7 East 12th Street , 3rd Floor, at these offices you must request that a "flag" (cell phone number not provided) be placed in your record. This will enable you to register. You may also send an email to registration@nyu.edu to indicate that you don't have a cell phone number to provide. Once you do have a number you must enter it via Albert. For more information, visit http://www.nyu.edu/registrar/registration/requirements.html
Class registration
To maintain status in the United States, F-1 and J-1 students must register and complete a full-time course load (at minimum 12 credits) every semester, as required by immigration regulations. No summer study is required. A course carries a specified number of points or credit hours, referring both to the number of hours per week that a class meets and the number of credits earned toward a degree. Thus, by completing one two-credit, two three-credit courses, and one four-credit course, a student earns 12 credits toward a degree. Undergraduate students generally take 15-18 credits per semester; graduate students rarely take more than 12.
It is not advisable to take extra courses the first semester. Undertaking too many courses in the beginning can be discouraging and result in poor academic performance. Even if English is your first language, you need time to adjust to the pace and style of U.S. teaching. When arranging a course schedule, speak to other students, as well as your academic advisor, to put together a good schedule. Students who enroll for fewer than 12 credits for any reason must submit obtain authorization from the OISS prior to finalizing registration. The part-time enrollment form must be completed no later than one week from the first day of classes. Enrollment for fewer than 12 credits without OISS approval subjects a student to loss of F-1 or J-1 status in the U.S. and must be reported to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as required by law.
First semester registration must be done in person. Graduate students will be assigned an academic advisor in the department, undergraduate students will meet with an advisor from the school's advising center. After the first semester, students can use the Torchtone system or Albert to register, as described in a later section.
