FAQs
Before You Arrive at NYU
Q Can I apply for a visa in the United States?
A No. You must apply for a visa outside the United States at a U.S. embassy or consulate. The application process is most efficient in your home country. We strongly urge scholars to visit the U.S. State Department's websites of Visa Wait Times
and U.S. Embassies and Consulates regarding the required procedures and timeframes for visa processing at embassies and consulates overseas. See Applying for a Visa for further information.
Q I am Canadian. Do I need to get a visa stamp?
A Canadian citizens do not need a passport or an entry visa to enter the
U.S. from Canada or another country within the Western Hemisphere (a
passport is required for entry from a third country outside the Western
Hemisphere). However, Canadians must show Form DS-2019 or I-797 approval notice at the port of entry to obtain appropriate status on their
I-94/Arrival/Departure Record.
Q I have a visa stamp in my passport for another institution and I have transferred to NYU in the same status. Do I need to apply for a new visa stamp for NYU when I travel next time?
A No. As long as it is still valid, you can use the same visa stamp you were originally issued when you return to the U.S. to continue at NYU, even though it was issued for work or research at another institution.
Q Can I enter the U.S. before my NYU appointment officially begins?
A If you are entering on a J-1 visa, you may enter the U.S. up to 30 days
before the begin date as indicated in #3 on your DS-2019 and not later than 30 days after the begin date. If for any reason, you are unable to arrive in the U.S. within that timeframe, please contact our office as soon as possible. If you are entering in E-3, H-1B, O-1 or TN visa status, you may enter the U.S. up to 10 days before the begin date of your employment.
After you Arrive at NYU
Q I just arrived in the U.S. Do I need to do anything with your office?
A Immediately upon your arrival at NYU, contact International Scholar
Services to inform us of your arrival. Even if you have been to NYU before,
we need you to know you have arrived to start a new program under NYU's sponsorship. Click here for a detailed Checklist for New Scholars
at NYU.
If you are a J-1 scholar, within two weeks, you must attend an orientation session at our office. See the J-1 Registration section for more information. If you are an H-1B scholar see the H-1B Registration section for more information. If you are an O-1 scholar, see the O-1 Registration section for more information.
Q How do I get an NYU identification card?
A Since every member of the NYU community is required to have an NYUCard, you should obtain your card as soon as possible. For more information, click HERE.
Q Since I arrived last month, I have changed my local address. Do I need to inform you?
A Within 10 days of moving, you must inform International Scholar Services of your new address. You can email to the attention of Scholar Services at intl.students.scholars@nyu.edu with the information.
If you are a J-1 scholar, we must update your information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database.
If you are in E-3, H1-B or O-1 status, you must submit the AR-11 form to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) within 10 days. Form AR-11 is
available on the DHS/CIS web site. If you are subject to Special
Registration, use Form AR-11 Special Registration.
Q I need a Social Security number. How do I get one?
A To apply for a Social Security number, go in person with your passport,
DS-2019 or I-797 form, and I-94 card to a local branch of the U.S. Social
Security Administration. Be sure to get a receipt of submission so you can
present it to an NYU administrator if necessary. If you are a J-1 scholar,
you must register with our office at least two days before applying for a
Social Security number. For more information on Social Security cards, see the Taxes / Social Security section.
Q Do I need to notify you when I leave NYU?
A You only need to notify us if you are leaving early. If you are on a J-1
visa, you must notify International Scholar Services only if you plan to
leave NYU more than 30 days before the end date on your DS-2019 form.
Q My visa is expiring. Do I need to leave the United States?
A No. You do not need to travel outside the United States if the visa stamp
in your passport is expiring. In fact, your visa stamp may expire any time
while you are in the U.S. as long as your DS-2019 or I-797 form and I-94
card are valid. You only need to apply for a renewal of your visa stamp if
you are outside the U.S. and plan to reenter.
