IMMIGRATION MATTERS

Register Now for the Fall 2012 Semester

Fall registration for all continuing students is now available. It is beneficial to plan now for the fall semester. You must have the following entered into your ALBERT record by the start of the fall semester:

1. Full time registration [at least 12 credits]

- OR full time equivalency [read your school's full-time equivalency policy and speak to your academic advisor or director of graduate studies; make sure your ALBERT record is properly coded]

- OR OISS Part Time Enrollment [PTE] approval

2.Your updated U.S. residential and home country addresses and telephone numbers

May Completion Date and On-Campus Employment

F-1 and J-1 students who are completing their programs by May 2012 must end any/all on-campus job(s) by the end date listed on the I-20/DS-2019. This is based on government regulations. Be sure to notify your supervisor accordingly.

May Completion Date and Continuation of NYU Health Insurance

Students who are completing degrees May 2012 are eligible to apply for an extension of up to six months of the NYU Health Insurance. To enroll in the Continuation Option:

1.Go to www.chpstudent.com/nyu ;
2. Click on the Continuation Plan link on the left side of the webpage; and
3. Follow the instructions, which will include asking if any dependents will be enrolled.

Summer Travel?

Review your I-20 or DS-2019 to see if you need a new travel signature. If you are not sure, watch the mandatory travel workshop at here. Bring your passport, I-94 and I-20 or DS-2019 to the OISS walk-in hours for a travel signature. Apply for a new document if any information has changed or if you need an extension to study. Note that you must obtain a new I-20 or DS-2019 before your current document expires.

Visa Expiration

Many students get confused about the role of the visa. The visa is the stamp issued by the U.S. Consulate for entry purposes to the U.S. [except for Canadian citizens]. The visa does NOT control how long you stay in the U.S. However, the visa stamp must be valid (or a new one obtained) if you decide to travel outside the U.S. and need to re-enter. For more information on the visa stamp and how to obtain a new one, view the mandatory on-line travel workshop and the OISS information on visa expiration.

Will You Be at the NYC NYU Campus This Fall?

If you plan to take a leave of absence or study or research outside the U.S., meet with an OISS advisor before finalizing your plans. It is important to understand what steps you must take to comply with government regulations. Read all the details on study or research abroad.

Completing Studies this Spring?

If you are finishing your NYU program this spring and intend to return home, be aware that as an F-1 student you have a 60 day “grace period” to depart following the completion date on your I-20 and as a J-1 student you have a 30 day “grace period” to depart.

Fall 2012 Employment

Are you finishing your program this summer and want to apply for Optional Practical Training for the fall? Or, are you enrolled this fall and want to work part-time on optional practical training? Find out how by viewing the required OISS workshop online.
