Workshops

The OISS offers the following online workshops for students (workshops include audio):

Travel
F-1 Off-Campus Employment Options (Before Completion of Studies)
F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training*
*Click HERE for supplemental OPT information

If you choose the online travel workshop, make sure to come to the OISS to get a travel signature from an OISS advisor before departing the U.S. Finally, make sure to complete the form at the end of each workshop so the OISS can mark your attendance.

The OISS also offers limited in-person workshops to review the above topics.

All workshops are held in the OISS Conference Room at 561 LaGuardia Place unless otherwise noted. If you plan to attend a workshop, please arrive prior to the beginning time as late arrivals will not be admitted into the workshop once the workshop has begun.

Travel Workshop

Mandatory (either online or at the OISS) for all F-1 and J-1 students receiving their first NYU travel signature. Students who have already attended a travel workshop may get an updated signature from an OISS advisor during walk-in hours. This workshop is designed to inform international students of the requirements for traveling outside of and returning to the U.S. in valid F-1 or J-1 student status. Other topics discussed include: travel to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean and renewal of F-1 and J-1 visas. OISS travel certification is given at the end of the workshop; accordingly you must bring your passport, I-94 card, and I-20 or DS-2019 form to receive travel certification. J-1 students who received their DS-2019 from a sponsoring organization such as Fulbright must obtain their travel signature from their sponsor.

F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training Workshop
Work AFTER completion of program

F-1 students who have or are nearing completion of degree requirements may be eligible for post-completion optional practical training, which allows up to 12 months of employment authorization. All F-1 students should attend (or view the online workshop) in their final semester of study. You will learn about eligibility criteria, application procedure, the Department of Homeland Security's strict deadlines, and travel after completion of studies.
