Change of Program
J-1 students sponsored by NYU who will change programs must speak with an OISS advisor once admitted to a new program.
F-1 students sponsored by NYU who will change to a higher degree level, or who complete one degree program and will pursue another at NYU, must apply for a new I-20. You should apply for a new I-20 as soon as you are admitted to a new program. The processing time for a new I-20 is approximately 2 weeks.
To apply for a new I-20, you must submit the following to the OISS:
- A brief cover letter with your name, NYU ID number, the date by which you will complete your current program, the new program you will pursue, and if you plan to travel outside the U.S. prior to the start of the new program.
- Updated financial documentation demonstrating you have sufficient liquid assets to cover all your expenses for the first year of study in your new program. Click HERE for a list of estimated expenses (you must log in with your NYU net ID and password). The new financial documents must be in English (or have a certified English translation attached to the original) and should be issued within the past 6 months. If you have F-2 dependents, you must document an additional $10,800 for your spouse and $5,400 for each child.
If another individual (such as a family member) will sponsor you, that person must submit an affidavit of support in addition to proof of his or her funding ability. If more than one accountholder name is listed on the financial documents you submit, then each accountholder must submit a signed affidavit of support.
Supporting financial documents may include but are not limited to:
- Personal funds: a current bank statement or letter printed on letterhead and signed by a bank official
- Personal loan: an approval or pre-approval letter confirming loan amount
- NYU funds: a copy of a scholarship, assistantship, or fellowship award letter
- Organizational funds: a copy of an award letter specifying the amount of the award, its duration, and the terms of renewal
- Room and board: The value is estimated to be $10,000 per year. Attach a letter from the individual providing room and board that includes their full name, address, and telephone number and that stipulates the terms and duration of the offer of room and board
Students who want the new I-20 sent via UPS express mail must include an express fee payment (the fee is $35 if the destination address is within North America; $50 to all other destinations). You may pay by cash, check (payable to New York University ), or credit card. Make sure to provide your street address including postal code and your telephone number. UPS cannot deliver to P.O. boxes.
You may submit your application to the OISS by mail or fax (212-995-4115) or you may submit it to the OISS receptionist. Write your name and student ID number on all items submitted. An OISS advisor will review your application and will contact you in the event that further information is required.
