J-1 Academic Training
(cont.) (1) Obtain A Job/Training Offer Letter And A Recommendation Letter from Your NYU Academic Advisor. Your advisor must state the following:
- your name, student ID number, and program
- that you have made satisfactory academic progress
- the goals and objectives of the training
- the position you will take
- the training location / company name and address
- your supervisor's name
- the anticipated number of hours per week
- the start and end dates of employment
- that the training relates to your field of studies
- that the training is an integral part of your studies
(2) Bring Your Application to The OISS During Walk-In Hours.
- Your passport, I-94 card, and DS-2019(s)
- Your advisor's letter
- A letter from your prospective employer outlining the job / training offer
- Evidence of your health insurance coverage during the post-completion academic training period
The OISS will evaluate your application. If eligible, an advisor will issue a work authorization letter and issue a new DS-2019 if needed to extend your stay.
Health Insurance and Other Requirements
- J-1 students and their J-2 dependent family members must maintain continuous health insurance while in the U.S., even while on post-completion Academic Training. You may speak to an OISS advisor when applying for academic training about the possibility of continuing your NYU health insurance coverage. Failure to maintain health insurance is a violation of the J-Exchange Visitor regulations.
- Travel while on academic training can be complicated, especially if your visa has expired. Please speak to an OISS advisor to discuss your travel plans.
Early Termination or Extensions of Academic Training
If you resign from your academic training or are terminated prior to the expiration of your authorized period, you must notify an OISS advisor immediately. If you wish to extend your academic training, you must speak to an OISS advisor prior to the expiration of your current authorized period.
