J-1 On Campus Employment

As a J-1 student in a degree program, you are eligible to work on-campus as long as you meet certain eligibility criteria as indicated below.

  • You must be a full-time student in an NYU degree program
  • You must have a valid, unexpired DS-2019 from NYU or another outside sponsoring Exchange Visitor organization (such as IIE/Fulbright) authorizing you to engage in full-time studies at NYU
  • You must have a valid, unexpired passport
  • You must have an I-94 card that is marked "J-1 D/S"
  • You must have a letter from your J-1 sponsor specifically authorizing you to engage in on-campus employment at NYU. J-1 students sponsored by NYU should obtain this letter from the OISS; others must obtain this letter from their sponsoring organization.
As long as you meet the above criteria, you may engage in on-campus employment. There is no "waiting period" before you are allowed to accept an on-campus job.

Restrictions on Locations and Hours

On-campus employment must take place according to the following restrictions

You may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the school year, full-time (over 20 hours per week) during vacation periods.

Your employment may take place at any NYU office or department, or a commercial firm located at NYU that provides direct services to students (e.g., the NYU bookstore). On-campus employment also includes graduate or teaching assistantships.

Procedures

J-1 students sponsored directly by NYU should come to the OISS with their passport, I-94 card, and DS-2019 during Advisor-on-Duty (AOD) hours to obtain a J-1 on-campus employment authorization letter.

J-1 students not sponsored by NYU should speak to their sponsoring organization or agency to obtain a J-1 on-campus employment authorization letter.

You will need to obtain a Social Security Number to get paid by NYU. Read the instructions on applying for a Social Security Number once you have secured employment.
